Strength in diversity

Diversityhas always been an integral part of Roland Berger's values and the company's success. Thus, it's no surprise that the consultancy is among the first signatories of the Diversity Charter, a new initiative launched by the German government.

Together with 32 companies and public institutions, Roland Berger Strategy Consultants is among the first signatories of the Diversity Charter of Companies in Germany. With this declaration of intent, the companies undertake to acknowledge the value of diversity and create a working environment free of prejudice. The charter is also intended as a sign that the differences among the workforce, customers and business partners are acknowledged and valued.

The charter initiative was launched by DaimlerChrysler, Deutsche Bank, Deutsche Telekom and BP, and has the German Chancellor Angela Merkel as its patron. She hopes that in the European Year of Equal Opportunities for All (2007), many more companies will follow suit. The Commissioner for Migration, Refugees and Integration, Maria Böhmer, signed the charter on behalf of Germany's federal government.
The charter uses a broad definition of diversity, covering gender, race, nationality, ethnic origin, religion or world view, disability, age, sexual orientation and identity. The aim is to create a working environment free of prejudice and based on inclusion and mutual respect. The signatories also make it clear that they see diversity as a positive resource for society and consider it to be beneficial to business.

All public-sector employers and private companies, of any size and in any industry, are invited to support this initiative.
Diversity as an opportunity - The Diversity Charter of Companies in Germany

The diversity of modern society, influenced by globalization and demographic change, shapes economic life in Germany. We can only be economically successful if we acknowledge and benefit from the diversity that exists. This relates to the diversity of our workforce and the diverse needs of our customers and business partners.

The diversity of employees, with their varied abilities and talents, opens up opportunities for innovative and creative solutions.

The aim of implementing the Diversity Charter at our companies is to create a working environment free of prejudice. All employees should be valued – regardless of their gender, race, nationality, ethnic origin, religion or world view, disability, age, sexual orientation and identity. Acknowledging and promoting this variety of potential creates economic benefits for our company.

We will create a climate of acceptance and mutual respect. This will have a positive effect on our reputation with our business partners and consumers, in Germany as well as in other countries.

As part of this charter we will:
  1. Maintain a corporate culture characterized by mutual respect and appreciation of every individual. We will create the conditions to ensure that managers and staff acknowledge, share and live these values. This places a special obligation on managers and superiors.
  2. Review our personnel processes and ensure that they take account of the varied abilities and talents of all our employees and of our performance requirements.
  3. Acknowledge the diversity of society within and beyond our company, appreciate the potential of it and deploy it profitably for the company.
  4. Make the implementation of the charter the subject of internal and external discussion.
  5. Provide annual information to the public about our activities and progress in promoting diversity and appreciation.
  6. Inform our employees about diversity and involve them in implementing the charter.
Of this we are absolutely certain: Diversity that is lived, and appreciation of this diversity, has a positive effect on society in Germany.

Signatories:

Dr. Burkhard Schwenker, CEO, Roland Berger Strategy Consultants

Prof. Maria Böhmer, Minister of State and Federal Government Commissioner for Migration, Refugees and Integration
