Roland Berger Consultants help renew HOPE in the face of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression

Focus: HOPE – A civil and human rights organization
Focus: HOPE – A civil and human rights organization that emerged from the 1967 Detroit riots

With the vision and leadership of Father William T. Cunningham and Eleanor M. Josaitis, Focus: HOPE emerged in 1968 from the ashes of the Detroit riots. The civil and human rights organization has created an astonishing variety of innovative programs aimed at overcoming racism, poverty and injustice by fostering integration and bringing the educationally and financially disadvantaged into the economic mainstream.

While having few material resources at their disposal, Father Cunningham and Ms. Josaitis possessed a singular and unrelenting desire to help the residents of Detroit take control of their lives. As a result Focus: HOPE has served as an invaluable, multifaceted resource for the people of metropolitan Detroit.

However, over the last 40 years, the needs of the community have changed, so Focus: HOPE must change as well.

Renewing HOPE in the face of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression

Detroit faces numerous economic and social challenges. The impact of global competition and the restructuring in the automotive industry are placing pressure on the Detroit areas businesses and labor markets. Compounding this stress is the fact that Detroit has gradually transitioned from being one of the best school systems in the nation in the 1950's into an educational crisis that graduates less than 25% of its students. This educational crisis has adverse effects on the social well-being of families and limits the economic growth potential of Detroit and the State of Michigan.

Therefore, it is appropriate that during this current period of upheaval and change, Focus: HOPE pursues strategies that will allow it to maximize its positive social impact on the community moving forward.

Over a period of almost five months, a three person team of Roland Berger Consultants in Detroit, led by Principal Steve Weisenstein, had the great honor of guiding this prominent non-profit organization in the development of a strategic plan to ensure that its next 40 years are just as impactful as the first 40.

In 2009, a reinvigorated Focus: HOPE will charge forward with new strategic initiatives that will help it meet the economic and social challenges that define the Metro Detroit community today.

The consultants were impressed by the energy and commitment of newly minted Focus: HOPE CEO William F. Jones, Jr. to take bold action to renew Focus: HOPE going forward.

It's hard to sum up the excitement of Roland Berger Consultants that worked on this project, but one team member's quote may just do it: "This will definitely stand out as one of my most memorable consulting engagements. I look forward to doing whatever I can to stay engaged with Focus: HOPE in the future to help with its transformation."

For Roland Berger, this project represents a continuation of the firm's relationship with Focus: HOPE. "While we are a global consultancy, we are still strongly committed to having a positive impact on our local communities. In the U.S., we are dedicated to the success of Focus: HOPE." Juergen Reers, North American Managing Partner.
