A cultural gem in need of help - Munich's puppet theater

The theater may have a definite educational mandate
The origins of the Munich puppet theater date back to the year 1858. The neo-baroque theater in Munich is actually the oldest puppet theater building in the world. Still today the Münchner Marionettentheater often provides the very first theater experience in the life of a Munich child. But so far the traditional cultural institution was operated without a clear communication strategy and without resorting to modern marketing and sales channels.

Upon closer look, it was apparent that our consultants' support was urgently needed. The consulting team was convinced that these puppet shows are an art form in their own right, with modern features that are certainly worth preserving. The theater is ideally suited to offering quality entertainment for all age groups. Therefore, and because the theater imparts values and a sense of culture, it may have a definite educational mandate.

Thus, as part of a pro bono project over a couple of months, two Roland Berger Partners together with two consultants, two theater representatives, two members of a "friends of the theater" circle and three external aides conducted three workshops. They thoroughly analyzed current shortcomings and developed a vision for the theater in the form of a detailed strategy and marketing concept. In terms of marketing, for instance, the theater's website is being given a complete overhaul, including the addition of an online shop. Furthermore, our consultants rolled out a series of flagship pilot projects. An RB alumnus, now co-CEO at Munich-based Internet company, and another Munich IT company helped out by doing quite a bit of pro-bono work for the puppet theater as well.

When the project team met at our Munich's headquarters for the last time, theater director Böhmke expressed his deep gratitude to the entire consulting team – in words and deeds: Specifically for the occasion, he had written a funny little piece about all the consulting buzzwords he had learned during the course of the project. To perform the 5-minute piece right there at the conference room, he had brought along one of his favorite puppets, a cute, slightly oversized rat.
