Project management
Projects are part of everyday routine at virtually every company. In most cases, however, managing project portfolios is a challenge that can no longer be mastered without suitable systems. Optimal multiproject management – Roland Berger's answer to this problem – ensures that all of a company's projects are managed efficiently and profitably.
In brief
Efficient multiproject management
Multiproject management (MPM) is not an end in itself, but a means to an end. MPM enables you to systematically identify and realize the earnings and value potential in all your projects. It helps you to efficiently coordinate and manage the projects to which your company is committed – and at the same time adds value that shows up clearly on the income statement.
Good MPM improves the quality of project information and thus simplifies the decision making process.
Phase 1: Mapping out the project landscape
We help you to screen all current activities by compiling and recording the various goals, the people/units responsible, the potential identified and the resources deployed. The result is a long list of current projects and an initial outline of the anticipated effects.
Full-blown multiproject management requires everyone in the project to break out of the mold. We help you to bring about this change of mindset and mobilize the forces you need to realize your goals. Changes in employee behavior are effected by means of well-targeted communication, train-the-trainer activities and the central provisioning and refinement of knowledge and best practices. A communication strategy effectively lays the cornerstone for such change in phase 1.
The experience we contribute and the proven tools with which we systematically compile project data throughout your company give you the benefit of added value. Our outside perspective guarantees an impartial approach. Our communication strategy caters fully to the fact that internal barriers may have to be overcome.
Phase 2: Consolidating the project landscape
We apply a consistent methodology to systematically structure your project landscape. We collaborate with the people in each project to formulate rules and definitions that will place projects and actions on a comparable basis. The result is a consistent project landscape in which duplication is eliminated and projects comply with a uniform standard.
This systematic approach often for the very first time gives companies a realistic view of all the effects that they can expect. Experience shows that it is also usually necessary to act to close an earnings gap.
Phase 3: Embedding
Drawing on our functional and industry expertise, benchmarks and project experience, we prioritize projects and work with you to set realistic goals and time frames. Existing projects are realigned and complemented by additional areas of activity and/or new projects. Where appropriate, we also propose actions designed to close specific earnings gaps – and then walk you through implementation. Our cross-industry perspective enables us to draw on best practice strategies across the board.
During this phase we embed multiproject management in your company to ensure that you can manage your project portfolio sustainably and efficiently. We create the right infrastructure and the right process conditions (e.g. meeting roadmaps). At the same time, training and support ensures that MPM always builds on a solid foundation.
