Survey on US energy market

Jürgen Reers
Jürgen Reers, Managing Partner from the Detroit office, at the 2nd annual German-American Energy Conference in Berlin
The German-American Energy Conference is the main event for German and US companies doing transatlantic business in renewables and energy efficiency. Jürgen Reers, Managing Partner from the Detroit office, presented March 22nd at the 2nd annual conference in Berlin. His speech created strong awareness of Roland Berger's strengths in the energy sector in North America. The presentation was very well received and has been cited in multiple publications.

US renewables and energy efficiency survey

In his speech, Jürgen focused on the results of a survey jointly undertaken by the German-American Chamber of Commerce (GACC) and Roland Berger North America. The survey polled GACC members, US-based organizations and German companies doing business in the US, to understand the current dynamics in energy sectors such as wind, solar, bio-energy and energy efficiency. Survey questions focused on four key factors in the US renewable energy and energy efficiency markets in the US:

What are the current expectations for revenue and job growth for the coming years?

What are the key challenges renewable energy organizations currently face and what are their proposed solutions?

From where do organizations perceive to be the largest competition in their sectors?

What is the current state of German American partnership and what is the interest in expanding the partnership?

High expectations

Both US and German organizations expressed strong expectations for revenue and job growth in the US in each sector. The poor economy was cited as the largest challenge to this growth by both US and German organizations. US firms also expressed concerns about obtaining funding.

For German companies, another large concern was the lack of consistent energy policy. Almost all companies stated that the two most important solutions are educating consumers about true energy costs and setting a national renewable standard.

Competitive positions

The survey also asked the participate to assess the relative competitive position of different countries with regard to the various energy sources. In wind, US and German companies were thought to be the strongest competition, with other European countries being third. In solar, US and Chinese companies were thought to be the largest competition, demonstrating just how far the Chinese solar industry has come in the marketplace.

In bio-energy, after the US, there seems to be no clear competitive leader. Little difference was seen between German firms and firms from regions such as China, Canada, and other European countries. It can be expected that the competitive landscape will become much clearer in coming years. In energy efficiency, the US again is most clearly seen as the strongest competition, with no other region perceived to be a strong competitor.

German-American partnerships

Although most German-American partnerships have been founded in the last five years, many have already pushed into areas such as innovation. In the survey, US companies expressed interest in expanding these current partnerships and also developing new ones. There was a appreciation by US firms for the technological leadership of the German energy industry. Not surprisingly then, US companies expressed strong interest in innovation partnerships and joint ventures.
