Beyond gloom and doom

Global Topics: Our three high-impact content initiatives "Project 2012, Inside Africa, and 8 Billion" now boast their own brand-new website.

Our global topics look at potentially earth-shattering trends we and our contemporaries "must keep up with or risk missing the boat," says Roland Berger CEO Martin Wittig.

One of these megatrends is global demography: With 8 billion business opportunities – Economic prospects of population growth, Roland Berger bypasses today's fashionable gloom and doom scenarios. "We want to provide a fair perspective of the economic opportunities inherent in tomorrow's populous world," explains EC member Bernd Brunke, pointing to the structural effects of population growth, for instance. "30 years ago, the emerging and developing countries had "only" 1.2 billion people aged 25 to 64 – in other words, of working age – while in 2030 this figure will be 3.5 billion. That is a threefold increase, with a positive impact on the economy."

This year's second global topic, Inside Africa – Our next opportunity for sustainable growth and development aims at a new and equitable business partnership with this continent. And lastly, Project 2012 – Why 2012 will turn the world upside down focuses on ways in which next year's elections and potential leadership changes will have lasting effects on the global economy. The publications, tools and events envisaged as a result of our Global Topics initiative do not merely serve to analyze well-known trends. They are meant to offer fresh and optimistic assessments of the state of the world in the short term (Project2012), medium term (Inside Africa), and long term (8 billion business opportunities).
The Global Topics strategy

These Global Topics, initiated and coordinated by Global Marketing, are not a one-time effort, either. Each year from now on, our firm will focus considerable research, writing and marketing efforts on one to three global topics which reach beyond immediate industry or market-orientation.

What does 2012 hold in store?

Right now, multifaceted efforts on the part of consultants, researchers, high-profile international content partners and some external writers are under way to generate top-notch content. In 2012, their work will bear fruit: For each topic, several print and electronic publications are in the making.

One of the highlights of next year's first quarter activities will be the "African Week" held in Berlin in conjunction with the Best of European Business Germany event in March. The program will consist of panel discussions with leaders in business, politics and society. In a variety of different workshops, the African Week will bring together African participants, for instance from the financial industry and the public sector, with German institutions, associations and companies active on the continent. One of the workshops will convene Young Global Leaders from both Africa and Europe.
