Entrepreneurship
To start a new business, you need a good idea and a well-thought-out business concept that you can sell efficiently. At the INSEAD Business Venture Competition, participants showed that they had what it takes.
"Interest in entrepreneurship is at an all-time high," says Steve Haslett, professor at the INSEAD Business School's Asia campus. This interest was reflected in the number of applications for the 10th INSEAD Business Venture Competition. "Our competition has attracted a record number of entries. Increasingly, MBA graduates consider starting a venture immediately after graduation," he says.
The start-up ideas that were submitted to INSEAD could not be more different from one another. They range from proposals for devices used for neurophysiologic research, to innovative services for mobile phone users, to a concept for relaxation zones in hi-tech business parks.
In the finals, a Singapore-based international team prevailed with a new technology for the early diagnosis of breast cancer. In a first reaction, the winners said: "This was the right push to start our new venture".

Look what else we' ve got...
"The quality of submissions was impressive," says Eugen von Keller, President of Roland Berger Asia. "The participants' ideas showed that they are prepared to take risks and are fully committed to building up a company. They have moved beyond just talking about the company; they are already living it." Roland Berger has sponsored the INSEAD Business Venture Competition since the first edition in 1999/2000, which were boom years. According to von Keller, the business ideas keep getting better. "Today, the business plans are well thought out, far better than they were during the period of Internet euphoria."
Steve Haslett believes that holding this year's competition in Singapore was a good decision. "Asia is a hotbed of entrepreneurial activity. Most global private equity and venture capital firms are launching or expanding their Asia operations." Whether they win the competition or not, MBA students see the competition as a huge opportunity, as they present their ideas to a jury of business experts. Sitting on the jury are not only company founders - one of them a previous INSEAD competition winner - but also experienced managers and high-level venture capital investors. "Our panel manages billions of dollars," says Haslett.
