Juliane Reinecke
"Learn as much as possible": Juliane Reinecke
Recently, Roland Berger Strategy Consultants made joining the consulting business with a Bachelor's degree possible. Juliane Reinecke is currently taking part in the Consulting Analyst program.

"I've got a Bachelor's... what can I do?" Julia Reinecke searched the web to find out what professional possibilities were available to her after completing a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and Economics in Bayreuth. The program being the first in Germany to combine the science of economics with philosophical thought made Reinecke wonder if her chosen field of study would meet the needs of the labor market.

"I've always been curious about consulting," says Juliane Reinecke. During her time at university, she worked with "Junior Beratung Bayreuth", a student consulting initiative. After graduation, she sought a professional consulting opportunity and found it at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants. With its new Consulting Analyst program, Roland Berger is the only consultancy in Germany to offer Bachelor program graduates an introduction to the profession.

"As a Consulting Analyst, you will spend nine to twelve months working on numerous projects with a wide range of topics," the advert reads. "Then you go back to university to complete your Master's degree. Once you graduate, you are offered a position as a Junior Consultant."

Reinecke found the offer quite attractive and decided to apply in autumn. "The recruiting day was a real challenge," she admits. "Eight consultants in dark suits sat across from five students. It was an unusual and impressive situation." Was she nervous? "I was at first," says Reineke, "but once I started talking I was able to calm down and deal with the application process in a relaxed manner."
Since her first day of work four months ago, the 24-year-old has been part of a project team that is restructuring the organization and leadership system of an international transport company. As a Consulting Analyst she is above all responsible for support tasks such as conducting research and making competitive analyses. She also helps prepare presentations and decision documents for clients.

What kind of experience has Reinecke gained in the short time since she began? What are the requirements that make up the consulting profession? "I've noticed that good communication within a team is extremely important," says the future consultant. "At university, you gather and analyze information mainly to understand it yourself. In the consulting business, you're providing a service, which requires that you present complex ideas as clearly and concisely as possible. The client has to be able to understand what you're saying at first glance."

The 24-year-old says that working as a Consulting Analyst has sharpened her interpersonal skills, which in turn has helped her learn more about herself. "I work many intensive hours with the team, and I'm constantly meeting new people on the client side," she says.

To help her walk her first steps in the professional world, Reinecke has a mentor who is there to support her throughout the nine months of the program. "I can have lunch with her, she answers all my questions and we discuss my upcoming tasks." The mentor is not only responsible for giving help and advice, but also for project staffing, which in this case means selecting the projects on which Juliane Reinecke will work on in her remaining time as a Consulting Analyst

With the project staffing system, Juliane Reinecke will get to know at least two other industries over the course of the Consulting Analyst program. In addition, Roland Berger Strategy Consultants has encouraged Reineke to participate in seminars on strategy and communication with clients. And, last but not least, she also has the opportunity to take part in extracurricular events like this summer's Roland Berger beach volleyball tournament.

This fall, Julia Reinecke intends to begin a Master's degree at Cambridge University in Innovation, Strategy and Organization. It is likely that she will write her thesis in cooperation with Roland Berger Strategy Consultants. Until then, Reineke wants to "learn as much as possible as a Consulting Analyst."
