Shaping Roland Berger’s strategy from the inside: Mathilde’s Internal Fellowship
Hi everyone, my name is Mathilde and I’m a Consultant at the Paris office. I’d like to share my experience stepping away from client work for a few months to help shape how we work at Roland Berger from within. The Internal Fellowship program gave me the opportunity to make a real impact on our company’s future by working on strategic internal initiatives. As an internal fellow in our Artificial Intelligence team, I was able to drive change across the organization, build additional skills, and gain a new perspective on how our firm operates.
Joining the internal AI team
I joined the team responsible for scaling Roland Berger’s internal AI platform. My responsibilities ranged from change management and process optimization to usage monitoring and internal communications. I helped create processes for the platform’s ongoing development, identified colleagues’ needs and use cases, and worked with the global talent development team to design and deliver training programs. I also contributed to newsletters and evaluated adoption and engagement across the company.
Every day was different. Sometimes I focused on process release cycles, other times I collaborated with AI teams or prepared training sessions. What struck me most was seeing the immediate impact - watching colleagues use the tools and processes we had built together.
Learning and growing beyond client projects
My fellowship pushed me to develop skills that were new to me at my current career stage as a Consultant. Running entire workstreams with limited guidance taught me what autonomy and ownership really mean.
I learned to anticipate needs and deliver ahead of requests. I also had to ensure the smooth progress of a project in collaboration with other teams. This included preparing a timeline, assigning actions to each person, organizing meetings to debrief, and making sure everyone was aligned on the next steps. Furthermore, I also gained valuable knowledge about digital solutions and AI, and experienced firsthand how these tools are transforming our ways of working.
Making a tangible impact
One of the most rewarding aspects was witnessing the direct results of my efforts. Seeing the processes and tools I helped develop being adopted across the organization made it clear that my contributions were truly making a difference within our firm.
Some things stayed the same - like the rigor in project management and regular progress updates to leadership. I enjoyed the open exchange with colleagues and the opportunity to actively shape internal processes, as this offered a unique chance for collaboration and impact.
Personal reflections
Reflecting on my Internal Fellowship, three things stand out. First, I expanded my network by working with colleagues across Roland Berger. Second, I developed new skills in project management and product development. And third, I contributed to strategic internal initiatives and saw tangible results from my work.
Now, as I return to my role as a Consultant, I’m sure I’ll benefit from everything I’ve learned and bring a fresh perspective to my client projects.
