Roland Berger chairs discussion on Southeast Asian telecom maturity at Capacity Asia

Roland Berger will participate in Capacity Asia for the second year in a row and will moderate the panel Dissecting investment opportunity in South-East Asia: Is it still a greenfield? The firm will be represented by Senior Partner, Damien Dujacquier, who leads Roland Berger's Telecom, Media and Technology (TMT) practice in Southeast Asia.

Singapore, October 30, 2017

Due to varying development levels in the telecom industries in the region and a young population that is fast moving into the middle-class, the region has caught the attention of TMT-focused investors. Foreign telecom operators are entering markets such as Myanmar and the Philippines in the hope of capitalizing on the region's development stage.

However, there is concern that the region, once considered largely greenfield, may have matured at an accelerated speed. "With more and more infrastructure being built in the region, it may be too late for new entrants in the region to grab a meaningful share of the pie," said Mr. Dujacquier.

He also noted that new telecom entrants would broaden access not only to the internet, but also provide access to platforms on the cloud and connect Internet of Things devices. "This extension in internet access may open up opportunities in other areas, but timing is crucial. If it is too early, critical adoption may not happen fast enough to maximize returns. On the other hand, investors who are late to the game may find it too crowded for profitability."

The panel will feature senior industry leaders from PLDT Inc. and Nokia, discussing their views on the direction of the TMT industry in the region and on how countries can continue to attract investment.

Capacity Asia will be held at The Conrad in Hong Kong from December 12-13, 2017. The long-running conference is in its 12th year and will discuss the most important topics related to carriers, data centers, OTT and cloud providers.
