Martin Wittig named Honorary Consul in Zurich

Martin Wittig, Honorary Consul in Zurich
On February 4, Martin Wittig, EC member and CFO of our company, formally accepted his new title in a ceremony hosted by the German ambassador to Switzerland.

In his new role, Wittig will be mostly working to improve business relations between Switzerland and his native Germany, as well as assisting German nationals who require help. The Zurich area is the largest consular area under the supervision of an honorary consul. Wittig was named Honorary Consul in Zurich by Germany's Federal President Horst Koehler and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

He and his family have lived in Switzerland for over nine years now, and are great fans of the country. Apart from the sheer beauty of Switzerland, Wittig says they especially appreciate the way the Swiss still value reliability and independent thinking. These values plus a truly democratic spirit prevail in this small Alpine republic, making it a pleasure to live and work there.

Wittig established his reputation in Switzerland when he assisted with the merger of Swiss and Lufthansa airlines, and he has handled many other high-profile commercial cooperative ventures during his time there. This has made him highly qualified for his new role, because to be nominated, a person must have contributed to excellent relations between the two countries and have worked directly on economic cooperation.

There is no salary for Wittig's work in his new role; such a post is awarded purely on an honorary basis, and that is what he sees it as: A great honor.
