Farr 40 world sailing championship 2007

  • Roland Berger Strategy Consultants is sponsoring the Farr 40 world sailing championship.
  • The competition will be held from August 28 to September 1, 2007, in Copenhagen.

Only one class of sailboats is used in the Farr 40 competition. The boats are of identical design, and success is based purely on the efforts of the crew. One of the special features of the Farr 40 is that only the owner can steer the boat, and he must have amateur status. The crew can have a maximum of four professionals and five to six amateurs. The yachts allowed in this competition, the first of which was launched in 1997, are outfitted with the latest sailing equipment. With up to 168 boats today, the class has filled a market niche where the owner alone has the final say.

In this year's competition, top sailors from Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the Ukraine and the USA will compete for the title of world champion. Ernesto Bertarelli, Brad Butterworth and Jesper Bank have already registered for the regatta.

Prior to the races in Copenhagen, the yachts and teams will be gauged and weighed, and all of the equipment will be checked. Random testing at the end of each day of the regatta will ensure that no rules were broken during the event. Many of the owners used to be involved with professional sailing projects. They enjoy the challenge of steering their boats themselves in the Farr 40, instead of letting a hired professional have all the fun.

Roland Berger Strategy Consultants was also the only strategy consultancy to sponsor the BMW ORACLE team in the 32nd America's Cup as official supplier.
