The state of the European banking industry
Roland Berger Strategy Consultants has screened the performance of 100 top European banks covering ~90% of the EU 27 banking Industry.
Slowly but surely, non-banking investors continue to gain market share in the overall EU Economy financing. From 2008 to 2013, Banks share has come from 71% to 62% in the financing of the Eurozone economy.
Meanwhile, European Banks have pursued their efforts to strengthen their balance sheet in line with Basel II requirements with less assets (-7% in 2013 vs 2012) and less risky assets (-2 pts of risk weighted assets over the same period). This has allowed the industry to increase its Tier 1 capital ratio at 16% in 2013.
In this regards, Fabrice Asvazadourian, Partner in charge of the global Financial Services practice at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, anticipates "The ECB Comprehensive Assessment will be a key milestone in convincing investors that the European Banking Industry has gone from dangerously undercapitalized to well capitalized. Balance sheet restructuring will continue in 2014 for some banks in anticipation or as a consequence of CA results".
