Merel

What educational/academic background do you have?
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences.

Why did you decide to go into consulting?
I’ve always had a broad interest in a variety of topics and couldn’t imagine doing the same thing for years. Consulting immediately appealed to me because it offers the chance to work on diverse topics with diverse people - exactly the variety I was looking for!

What is or has been the biggest challenge for you in consulting?
My biggest challenge is not getting caught up in the details. My academic background taught me to study things down to the molecular level, so it can sometimes still be challenging to zoom out and see the bigger picture. But this challenge is exactly what makes consulting so interesting.

How can you use your skills at Roland Berger?
When it’s necessary to dive deep into a topic, I can leverage my scientific training and analytical mindset. For example, my basic understanding of chemistry has been valuable in projects ranging from food & beverages to water treatment to the energy transition.

What did you learn that you will never need here?
I doubt I’ll ever need my animal dissection skills at work. So far, I haven’t encountered any rats, birds, or sea stars that needed dissecting - yet!

Which of your skills from your background makes your consulting life easier?
During my Master’s, I took a programming course – a skill I’ve only recently started using at work. It turns out to be surprisingly useful from time to time!

What did you want to be as a child and what would you love to be today if you weren't a consultant?
As a child, I wanted to be a singer. During high school and university, I used to sing and play piano with other musicians, which I loved. Covid disrupted that, but maybe I’ll pick it up again someday. For now, though, I can’t imagine doing anything other than consulting.

How does your team benefit from your skills?
I love working in teams with diverse backgrounds. It’s a privilege to learn from each other – not just in terms of content but also in ways of working. I believe we all benefit from each other’s unique skill sets, often in ways we don’t even realize!

What has been your favorite moment/project since you joined Roland Berger as a consultant?
It’s hard to pick a single favorite moment since joining Roland Berger. Looking back at my best memories, it’s always the people who make it memorable. Whether it’s a client visit, a training, or an office event, it’s not about where you are but who you are with!
