Digitalization creates value only when it rests on solid foundations and measurably improves execution and decision-making. Across the energy sector and the broader energy industry, fragmented processes and manual workflows still limit scalability and constrain the effective use of digital technologies and AI solutions. Establishing the prerequisites for digitalization – standardized end-to-end processes, clear data ownership and integrated system landscapes – is therefore the essential starting point.

Building on this foundation, digital and AI-enabled solutions become key enablers of growth, scalability and resilience. Data-driven decision support combined with advanced analytics and automation helps enterprises manage rising complexity across assets and commercial operations. Digital platforms and AI-powered tools strengthen planning and improve execution in both grid and support functions, increase transparency and accelerate decision-making. This enables companies to expand despite ongoing skilled labor shortages and regulatory challenges.

For utility companies, digital transformation also reshapes business models and the way they engage with the customer interface. IoT-enabled infrastructure and data-driven services support new value propositions in a rapidly evolving decentralized, low-carbon environment.

At Roland Berger, we typically structure digital transformation along four dimensions: digital vision, strategic fields for action, scaling lead optimization and target operating model. Initiatives are prioritized based on measurable value contribution, implementation feasibility and scalability across the asset portfolio. This ensures that investments in digital technologies and artificial intelligence translate into performance impact rather than isolated pilots.

Our work spans digital platforms for project development and asset deployment, data-driven grid operations and smart metering architectures. KPI-driven dashboards and digital steering tools provide real-time visibility into operational and financial performance, supporting more effective management and control. In practice, this includes asset deployment platforms for renewable projects that integrate site screening, grid access, permitting workflows and stakeholder engagement – shortening approval cycles and enabling teams to develop and deliver more projects at scale.

Our focus remains pragmatic: shorter development cycles, more reliable operations and leaner organizations. Digital and AI become an integral part of the operating model, enabling sustainable growth, higher productivity and long-term resilience across the energy sector.

How we helped other clients

A digital end-to-end platform for renewable energy project delivery

We helped a national renewable energy developer design and implement a digital end-to-end platform to significantly improve project development efficiency and scalability. The objective was to increase competitiveness by reducing CapEx and OpEx and accelerating project throughput in a transforming energy ecosystem. At the same time, the company wished to establish a future-ready operating model for continued growth in a highly competitive renewables market.

Our work focused on analyzing existing CapEx and OpEx drivers across the project development lifecycle, then identifying concrete improvement levers with the help of market benchmarks and stakeholder interviews. We developed a new target operating model with a future-proof organizational setup and clearly defined roles and responsibilities, supported by a job-transfer matrix. In parallel, we designed and implemented a digital end-to-end platform covering the full delivery process from concept and development to go-live to continuous improvement, including MVP definition, user stories and wireframes. The platform architecture incorporated validated concepts for AI-powered microservices to reduce manual effort and project cycle times.

The result was a scalable digital solution and prioritization logic enabling faster decision-making, higher development throughput and more effective resource allocation across the entire project portfolio.
