Exploring the global dynamics shaping the future of decarbonized transportation

The outlook for electric vehicles looks brighter than ever, but challenges along the path to mass adoption are further complicated by a backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions. In Roland Berger’s new article series, “Electrification in the Age of Deglobalization,” we will explore the global dynamics shaping the future of decarbonized transportation.

In Roland Berger’s new article series, “Electrification in the Age of Deglobalization,” we explore the global dynamics shaping the future of decarbonized transportation.

The first of the articles highlights how rising geopolitical tensions have altered the course of electrification and what industry participants must consider in this new environment. Subsequent articles will investigate how policies, regulations, resource scarcity, technology developments, changing consumer preferences, and other factors are impacting each facet of the electrified mobility space. Here are just some of the topics we will examine:

  • The future of electric vehicles in an increasingly deglobalized world
  • Unpacking the latest EU battery regulations
  • Chemicals opportunities in the EV value chain
  • Battery recycling opportunities and challenges
  • Europe's response to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)
  • What if the electrification future comes slower?
  • China’s charging infrastructure and the path to mass adoption

"Companies in the automotive value chain are already grappling with the accelerated pace of electrification, required capital investments, and profitability challenges. This shifting geopolitical landscape and scarcity of critical minerals will make the transition to electric vehicles all the more difficult."

The inspiration for our article series

The inaugural SAFE Summit, presented by SAFE and the Electrification Coalition on March 28–29, 2023, brought together influential figures from government and industry to share their insights related to transportation electrification. Guests and speakers included leaders from companies involved in critical mineral production, materials processing, battery manufacturing, vehicle assembly, and infrastructure development, among others (including Roland Berger Partner Isaac Chan, who participated in a panel focusing on the challenges and opportunities in electrification and batteries for the coming decade).

Our team was inspired by the breadth of the engaging dialogue taking place. Most attendees agreed that while great progress is being made on the electrification front, the unprecedented pace at which the industry continues to evolve raises important questions, particularly in the wake of today’s geopolitical context. Through our article series, Roland Berger’s intention is to address many of the most pressing issues and offer direction on how to harness the opportunities related to electrification.

We hope you find the article series thought provoking. If you have questions or would like to discuss your EV-related or other project challenges, please contact us.
